Los Shinigamis Del Norte: The Creation of Nortaku and Success

A few months ago, I was scrolling through Twitter and then I found something odd that caught my attention. It was a video about a Norteno band performing the classic Sailor Moon theme song “Moonlight Densetsu” as a cumbia. I was astounded and found out about the band.

Los Shinigamis Del Norte are a Norteno band from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. About a year ago, this band started to perform anime songs at their local anime convention in Mexico. Since then, their popularity soared and now is hot.

Los Shinigamis created nortaku, a mix of norteno and otaku music for their fans. Also called “frikicorridos” based on the English word “freak,” Los Shinigamis make cumbias and corridos out of well-known songs from Sailor Moon, Saint Seiya, Spongebob Squarepants, Digimon, Cardcaptor Sakura and more. These guys have a Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram page as well as a Youtube account.

As of this report, Los Shinigamis Del Norte is scheduled to appear this 19 and 20 November at Anime Ok! Expo at the Centro Civico de Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas. Expect some videos on social media and take a look for yourself. I can’t wait to hear what anime song they will perform next!
