Today on underground we are going to talk about the song that won the 2019 Rio Carnival and the meaning behind the song and this song is called “História pra ninar gente grande” or in English “History for Lulling Adults.”

The song was written by the following people for the Samba School Mangueira, which is one of the oldest schools that was founded in 1928:

  • Deivid Domenico
  • Tomaz Miranda
  • Mama
  • Marcio Bola
  • Ronie Oliverira
  • Danilo Firmino

The Song was sung by Marquinhos Art’Samba, and with both the music and his powerful vocals, the song shines, and it sounds like there was a block party going on, and everyone was invited. The lyrics on the other hand not for the block party people who were expecting a happy go lucky sound. The lyrics are about the history of the country, for better and for worst which included Marielle Franco, a councilwoman along with her driver, Anderson Gomes were assassinated in March of last year. Franco fought for the rights for everyone who lived in the Favela communities and sadly to this day the case has yet to be solved.

Just in the opening lyrics alone will tell you that this song is not going to sugar coat the topics and themes they are going to showcase and sing:

“BRASIL, MEU NEGO

DEIXA EU TE CONTAR

A HISTÓRIA QUE A HISTÓRIA NÃO CONTA

O AVESSO DO MESMO LUGAR

NA LUTA É QUE A GENTE SE ENCONTRA”

“BRAZIL, MY NEGO

LET ME TELL YOU

THE STORY THAT HISTORY DOES NOT ACCOUNT

THE SAME AVANCE

IN THE FIGHT IS THAT THE PEOPLE MEET” – Mangueira

As you can see the song and the parade does not hold back about the country’s dark history and also make sure to remind everyone never to forget how the country and the people got to where they are at today in the present.
