During the late 80’s and early 90’s, anime TV series and OVAs were at an all-time high and there was something for everyone. One of the best series of the 90s turns 30 and that series is Slayers.
The series is based on a novel series of the same name that was written by Hajime Kanzaka and illustrated by Rui Araizum, as of now the novel series is still on its current run and has a total of 17 volumes to date so far.
In April of 1995, Slayer was first aired on its forever home of TV Tokyo till its end in April of 2009 with a total of 104 episodes within 5 seasons. The 5 seasons were as follows:
- Slayers – 1995, 26 total episodes
- Slayers Next – 1996, 26 total episodes
- Slayers Try – 1997, 26 total episodes
- Slayers Revolution – 2008, 13 total episodes
- Slayers Evolution-R – 2009, 13 total episodes
If you are wondering why the long gap between Slayers Try and Slayers Revolution is because the studio that did the first three seasons of Slayers, E&G Films closed its doors back in 2003 and J.C. Staff bought the anime rights to Slayers and created Revolution and Evolution-R.
The series follows the adventures of Lina Inverse, the main protagonist and the face of the series. She is a teenager who is also one of the most well-known and powerful sorceresses in the world and has picked up too many nicknames that she rather not talk about. Along with her companion Gourry Gabriev, Amelia Wil Tesla Saillune, Xellos the Priest, and Zelgadis Graywords, they go around on adventures from the silliest to the end of the world level and many people have called Slayers as the lighthearted version of Record of the Lodoss Wars.
I grew up watching Slayers and I would recommend watching the series to your heart’s content if you love the series go watch the films and read the mangas because the novels haven’t been translated into English yet.
