Well, this was something no one saw coming by a long shot, an anime film winning its opening box office weekend by a large margin.

The Toei Animation film ended up being the number one film in the US with a $20.1 million box office finish, besting Beast and Bullet Train, which took in $11.6 and $8 million respectively. Not only was it number one at the box office, but it also made history of being the first anime film to do that in the US. The closest that came to that height was last year’s hit Deamon Slayer: Mugen Train which almost beat the new Mortal Kombat film.

Congrats to everyone at Toei Animation and the birdman himself, Akira Toriyama.
