Ahoy Captain Cats here and today I’m going to review quite possibly a graphic novel that was overlooked in 2019 and is worth the read and that book is Giraffes on Horseback Salad.

The story was originally a screenplay for a film of the same name back in 1937. It was written by famous Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dali for none other than Marx Brothers and also the fact that Dali was friends in real life with Harpo Marx. The story is about a Spanish aristocrat named Jimmy, who would have been played by Harop, falling in love with a “beautiful surrealist woman,” whom we don’t ever see her face at all in the graphic novel and her two trusted men are none other than Chico and Groucho.

From start to finish the story is beautiful and crazy as you can get, in other words, your average Marx Brother film i.e. Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, Horse Feathers and the list goes on and on. The art, on the other hand, is as beautiful as it is very surreal that even Dali would have loved it from the start. Artist Manuela Pertega did a wonderful job with the art and color choice here and with Josh Frank and American comedian Tim Heidecker of Tim & Eric fame Co-Authoring this adaptation and it is a hidden gem of a graphic novel. I’ll be honest I didn’t even know about this book ever existed at all last year and I didn’t even know about this lost script at all and I love the Marx Brothers.

Do yourself a huge fave and get a copy of this book and read it, it is one of the most interesting, crazy yet beautiful works of art and story you’ll have ever read.
