As a person who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, I was very fortunate to see many things. Many people today have no idea how important comic culture was during that time. During this time there was a change in the air in comics and two essential things happened, they were the rise of indie comics and the birth of Virtigo Comics and the impact that came with it. Shelly Bond was part of these events and in her new book Fast Times in Comic Book Editing, you see it from a point of view not many people can say “Oh ya I was there and was a part of this movement from the beginning.”
The book is an autobiography of Shelly’s life and time as an editor in the comic book world. You see how she got into the comic world and also her personal life as well and that part was the most interesting part of the book due to how being an editor during the 80s and 90s was and how it could affect one life. Another thing that also stood out was the artwork throughout the book, it changed from section to section and this helped show how she felt and how much of an impact said sections had on her life.
By the time I finished reading Fast Time in Comic Book Editing, I ended up looking up old pictures of myself of what I was doing during the 80s and 90s and this book has this time capsule vibe of if you wanted to know how the 80s and 90s comic scene was, Fast Times is your book. Unlike Bond, I was looking from the outside and trying to see glimpses of what was going on inside of the comic culture was going to be, especially with the rise of Vertigo Comics and the impact it left, which is still being felt to this day.
Fast Times in Comic Book Editing is a great, interesting read. It’s a part of history, but I think a lot of mainstream media and personalities either don’t really talk about this era in comics or talk bad about it. Once you read this from the point of view of an editor and person who was there, it will make you rethink not only as a comic fan but also as a person. Also the music recommendations in the book are a must listen to, especially while reading this book, this gives the book more character and a personal one of a kind experience.
