One of the best comics that has nothing to do with superheroes turns 25 and that series is The Goon.

The Goon is created by Eric Powell and was first introduced to the world in March of 1999 via Avatar Press, but due to Powell being unhappy with the quality of the book in the first 3 issues. He would go on to create Albatross Exploding Funny Books and continue publishing The Goon and Dark Horse publish the series as well.

The series tells the tale of The Goon, this beast of a man who with his right-hand man Franky, takes on the mob, the undead, and whatever else that would make bumps in the night to keep their little piece of turf safe.

The Goon is a hell of a comic that you have to read, not only that it has nothing to do with the usual superhero saves the day stick, it’s one part crime drama, one part comedy, one part horror and it works in its favor. How the way Powell brings this series to life with not just his artwork, but from storytelling as well.

Do yourself a favor and go read this hidden gem of a comic series. Also, fun fact this series has won 5 Eisner Awards.
