Singles Soundtrack Album: 30 years after Grunge

In the fall of 1992, the movie Singles came out. It stars Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillon, Campbell Scott, and Kyra Sedgwick. The film focuses on the relationships of two couples and their friends’ love lives in Seattle during the rise of Grunge music.

The soundtrack of the film came out on June 30, 1992. It helped popularize the grunge movement as well as put some bands on the map, including Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and The Smashing Pumpkins.

I remember this album fondly growing up because the tracks were very different than what constituted as popular music at the time. It was raw, new, and it piqued my interest in music. This album was a prophecy of what was to come: the emergence of genuinely new music that challenges the status quo without shame. From this album, I went on listening to other bands like Jane’s Addiction, The Pixies, L7, Stone Temple Pilots, Hole, and more. Grunge kicked major ass until April 8, 1994, when music never became the same again.

Go ahead and listen to this album! It is a time capsule of music history that cannot be ignored. You could feel the promise of change, rebellion against the obvious, the feeling of negating the banalities of society. Until that day in 1994, grunge was on top thanks to both the film Singles and its great soundtrack.
