E3 2011, how I remember it so well. So many great games and new hardware was coming out and also a lot of great hidden gem of games that many people passed on. I remember seeing Skull Girls there at the Konami Booth and fell in love with it at that moment. The demo only had 4 characters to play and they had another in development which I did get to play with and once I got home I couldn’t wait for it.
10 years later, Skull Girls is still alive and well. The fighting game that was a love letter to fans still holds up well. The gameplay style is a mix of Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Capcom vs SNK 2 and with an art style that will remind one of the Max Fleischer/ Loony Tunes. While the game only had a few features of game modes, the online gameplay, gameplay itself, and the cast of characters set it apart from what was out during this time and Mortal Kombat 9 was the game to beat at that time. The music for this game is just pure bliss and will talk more about it later this week.
While there were some dark times for the game with a situation that was going on in 2020 with former lead designer and programmer Mike Zaimont that lead to the creation of Future Club and the game making a comeback in full force. In 2021 with the release of Annie, the first new character for the game since 2014, and this year with Umbrella, Black Dahlia, and an unannounced character (I hope it’s Minette).
I still play Skull Girls to this day on both my home consoles and mobile device with the mobile version of the game that was released back in 2017 and still is great to play to this game. Thank you Autumn Games, Hidden Variable, and Future Club for keeping this love letter to fighting games alive and well.
