Sin City Turns 30

Ahoy Captain Cats here and today we are going to look at a comic series that turns 30 and that series is Sin City.

The neo-noir comic series was created, written, and drawn by Frank Miller, and the series’s first appearance was in Dark Horse Presents Fifth Anniversary Special in April of 1991. In May of the same here in the comic series Dark Horse Presents from issues #51 till June of 1992 with issue #62 it was known as Sin City. In an interview with The Kubert School back in 2016 Frank Miller explained where the idea of Sin City came from:

“I’ve been a fanatic for a long time for old crime movies and old crime novels. But it started with the movies. And the old Cagney movies. Bogart and all that. I loved just how the morals of the stories are. They’re all about right and wrong. But in Sin City in particular I wanted them all to happen to in a world where virtuous behavior was rare, which greatly resembled the world I lived in. It’s kinda like the old Rolling Stones song, where every cop’s a criminal, and all the sinners are saints, where the lowlifes would often be heroic, and the most stridently beautiful and sweet women would be prostitutes. I wanted it to be a world out of balance, where virtue is defined by individuals in difficult situations, not by an overwhelming sense of goodness that was somehow governed by this godlike Comics Code.” – Frank Miller 2016

This series would go on and became an instant classic, with so many classic characters such as Marv, John Hartigan, Nancy Callahan, Gail, The Roark Family, and of course deadly little Miho. Frank also released other stories from Sin City from 1992 till 2000 where the series ended. It was announced that for the series 30 anniversary Dark Horse Comics is going to release a 30th-anniversary edition of the first volume of Frank Miller’s Sin City “The Hard Goodbye” this Fall.
