Atari released a game that would be beloved for many years to come due to its D&D-like roots, simple gameplay, and level of difficulty and that game is Gauntlet and it turns 40.
Gauntlet is a top-down hack-and-slash maze game that places four players to play as a team to kill monsters, loot all the food and treasure they can, and get out of the level to go to the next level. The game had four characters to choose from and they are Thor the warrior, Merlin the wizard, Thyra the Valkyrie, and Questor the elf. What made the game unique is that each character had their strengths and weaknesses, for example, Merlin has the best magic abilities in the game but is horrible in combat.
The game was released to arcades first and soon after to the NES, Atari ST, Amstrad, Spectrum, and Master System. The game became a huge hit that spawned an entire series with a total of 9 games and the last game titled Gauntlet was released back in 2014 and was a reboot of the original game.
Gauntlet is a classic game and is recommended for anyone who wants to spend time with friends being heroes. I would also recommend playing Gauntlet Legends and its sequel Dark Legacy, both have a lot to offer and so much fun.
