DC doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to spin-offs and sequels. Just take a look at The Joker: Folie à Deux as a great example of “no one didn’t ask for this” syndrome, but in a very rare case, it works, and that is where The Penguin is at.

The Penguin is part spin-off and part sequel to the 2022 film “The Batman”, and the series takes place after the events of the film and we see Oswald “Oz” Cobb aka The Penguin rise to power within the Gotham underworld by all means necessary. The 8 episodes this series had are some of the best I have seen in a while in terms of storytelling, tone, setting, production value, and of course, the performances of Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Carmen Ejogo to name a few of the many who did a hell of a job in this series.

I must tip my hat to Colin Farrel. I didn’t think he could have pulled this kind of performance off as Oz Cobb, but somehow, by the end of the series, I didn’t see Farrell playing Oz Cobb; I only saw Oz Cobb. I hope there is a part two to this series. Not only that, but Rhenzy Feliz just gave a performance of a lifetime as Vic, and I hope he and Farrell get all the nominations and wins because they truly deserve them.

The Penguin is on Max now and I can say it’s The show of 2024 so far.
