I have been doing this job for almost 20 years on and off and I have read just about every book that has to deal with both the manga and comic industries in terms of what you need to do to improve your skills and such. I can say with no ego, that Filth & Grammar, the comic book editor’s (secret) handbook by Shelly Bond is a MUST-OWN BOOK for your library.

The book is written by Shelly Bond, a legendary editor who worked at Vertigo for two decades and worked with huge names in comics such as Bill Willingham, Paul Pope, Dean Motter, David Lapham, Mike Carey, and Grant Morrison. The book is a bible of what you need to know from a comic book editor’s point of view, and there has never been a book like this ever that I know of. Bond in her special way, tells you like it is on what an editor wants and doesn’t want from you and your creative team. The book has ten chapters and each one breaks down everything to a fundamental level, that anyone can read, understand, and will learn from it. Shelly teams up with artists Imogen Mangle, Laura Hole, and Mark Buckingham, to bring this book to life and give this book more personality, style, and attitude that I have seen in a long time.

Filth & Grammar is the first of its kind, a true comic book bible that is a must-own and I can’t stress that enough. Shelly Bond did a wonderful job with this book and if you want a copy for yourself you can order it from Shelly’s website, Off register press.
