Yo Ho, WeRCatz here!
Music Television (The real MTV before modernization) had a kick-ass animation segment called Liquid Television that showcased original animated content at the time. “Æon Flux,” Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s “The Running Man” (from the anime anthology film “Labyrinth Tales”), and Mike Judge’s original animated version of “Office Space” came from Liquid Television. But the second season of Liquid Television showcased another Mike Judge original…
On September 24, 1992, the fourth segment to the Season 2 premiere of Liquid Television was a little Mike Judge segment called “Frog Baseball.” This segment starred two teenagers called Beavis and Butt-Head. The rest is pop-culture history.
MTV liked it so much that the company ordered Judge to make a full series out of the two. On March 8, 1993, Beavis and Butt-Head became a reality and did not disappoint in comedy. Voiced by Judge himself, Beavis and Butt-Head take on the status quo, the horrors of political correctness, intellectuals, common sense, and, most famously, popular music with their respective music videos. In fact, music bands and artists had their careers on the line if they found out their music video was critiqued by Beavis and Butt-head! Case in point: the band Winger.
Due to several controversies and criticism, Beavis and Butt-Head would be pulled from MTV. The boys would return for one more season in 2011 before getting canceled again due to MTV’s modern demographic audience: 12-14-year-old females.
This didn’t stop our duo since Mike Judge was hired by Paramount+ to make another new run of Beavis and Butt-Head in February 2022. The new series premiered on August 4, 2022, to high acclaim with the tenth season premiering on April 20, 2023. As always, Beavis and Butt-Head are tackling modern issues with the same tactics. They never get old!
Fun fact: Daria is a spin-of of Beavis and Butt-head. She is the only character that Beavis and Butt-Head actually respect. Don’t believe it? Here’s a clip.
