Ahoy Captain Cats here and today Universal Pictures is going to do something no other studio has done before.
According to Cartoon Brew Universal Pictures is going to release it’s upcoming animated film Trolls World Tour both in theaters and Video On Demand (VOD for short.) The Dreamworks Animation film will be released on April 10 and making it the first-ever film in box office history to have a theatrical and VOD release date on the same day. Trolls World Tour will cost $20 and be available for a 48-hour rental via VOD in the USA.
This is a big gamble on Universal and it can end good or bad. On the bad side, they could lose on both fronts and could hurt the studio financially and how long it will take them to recover from this loss gamble. On the good side, this could mean if this gamble is a successful one this could lead to a new trend or a new business format on how films can be released in the future for both theatrical and VOD releases.
Whatever happens to this gamble I must say that Universal is making a bold statement and I wish them the best of luck on their April 10 opening weekend.
