Ahoy me mateys Captain Cats here! The Fall anime season has already started and it already has a series that already has too much heat and controversy and that series is Goblin Slayer. With just three episodes in and it already shown so much violence, death, blood and a lot of other things that I can’t say begs the question, is Goblin Slayer this generation Berserk? Before I answer that and for many of you, who are saying to yourself ‘ what are these two series the captain is talking about’ don’t worry I’ll explain right now.
Goblin Slayer is a dark fantasy light novel from Japan. Written by Kumo Kagyu and artwork done by Noboru Kannatsuki and is currently published by SB Creative. The series was first published on February 15, 2016, and as of now, there have been seven volumes so far. The series takes place in a Dungeons and Dragons like world, and the main character in this series is a silver ranked adventurer who takes a quest that involves goblins with one goal in mind; to expunge them with very extreme prejudice. In the first episode, we see that after what happens to a rookie group of adventures who bite off more than they can chew and the result was not pretty at all. Out of the small group of adventures who were destroyed by a group of goblins, a priestess was the only survivor, and at the end, she ended up joining our main character and going on more quests that involve with goblins. That’s just three episodes, and so many people are saying it’s too dark, graphic, violent, unbearable to watch and to be honest, that is why it’s called dark fantasy. It’s a gloomy, dark, horrific, violent atmosphere where it there is no such thing as a ‘happy ending’ or any ending that we, the readers, we’ll get unless the author gives it to us.
Berserk dark fantasy manga that is written and drawn by Kentaro Miura. The series started back in 1989 and still going on to this day, next year will be the series will be 30 years old. The series is set in a somewhat dark age medieval European dark fantasy world. The series follows a man name Guts, who is looking for revenge for the death of his comrades ‘The Band of Hawk’ and the head of the former leader of the group Griffith, who sold them out to obtain power in the most horrific way possible. Berserk has been turned into an anime series twice and a three-part movie:
Berserk 1997-1998: the 25 episode run is based on The Golden Age Arc in the manga.
Berserk 2016-2017: Season 1 covers The Conviction Arc and season 2 cover the first half of The Hawk of the Millennium Arc.
Berserk The Golden Age Arc film series 2012-2014: Part I The Egg of the King 2012, Part II The Battle for Doldrey 2013, Part III The Advent 2014. This is a retelling of the first Berserk anime series but in more depth.
Now to answer the question, no not by a long shot. Sure the violence is there and such, but what made Berserk really stand out is the development of the characters over the years and the themes of isolation, if humanity is good or evil on a fundamental level, see both the best and worst of the human nature in this world and compare it to our society. Goblin Slayer is just two years old with tons of side story projects in the works and only 3 episodes in a 12 episode run; I can’t say if it will be or not.
Only time will tell if it does or makes a name out of itself and be different from Berserk. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to give Goblin Slayer a chance and watch the rest of the season and give a full series review once its over.
So what do you think of either or series? Will you see either or series? Let us know in the comment below!
