Yo Ho, WeRCatz here!
Released on April 5, 2023, The Super Mario Bros Movie is receiving mixed to high praise. Most of the high praise comes from a generation of gamers that grew up playing Mario since 1985 despite the fact that the film is made for children. It stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong just to name a few of the ensemble cast.
If you went to “Nintendo U” back in the day, you will be prepared to blurt out a plethora of Nintendo’s various Easter eggs throughout the film. The music from the Nintendo catalog works exactly as it should when the moments present themselves. The progression of the film is almost exactly from the Mario series. From the introduction of Mario and Luigi moving through Brooklyn in the NES way to the N64 version of Peach’s Castle to various elements of Mario 3 and more, this film was made for kids, fans, and, gamers alike.
One of the few downsides would have to be the forceful insert of popular songs. “Take On Me” from Aha and AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” are placed in predictable situations and other popular songs made the film out of place at times. If you have a 40-year catalog of classic Mario music to use, why not use it? And what about Charles Martinet? We need more of him!
Another downside was the fact that the running time is 92 minutes. We could have had more characters coming out, but the post-credits scene may be our only hint of a possible sequel coming in the future!
As of this article, The Super Mario Bros Movie has broken all box office records on opening weekend. Even some of Illumination Studio’s other well-known franchises are eclipsed by Mario! This film is a must-see for gamers, fans, and families alike!
