After seven years since we had a Gundam series on TV, we got a new one and it just wrapped up its first half that series is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.

The series takes place in the distant future where the solar system is with the usual suspects of “Spacians” and “Earthians” bickering over stupid stuff like in almost every other Gundam series. The main protagonist Suletta Mercury shows up at a school with a Gundam named Aerial, who Suletta treats like a sister than a mobile suit. Soon after she meets the other protagonist Miorine Rembran and the rest of the cast and we see how Suletta tries her best to live up to everyone’s expectations.

The story itself is good and eye-catching, while at the same time having the same usual Gundam tropes such as emerging technology being dangerous, corruption in politics, revenge, and a cookie-cutter supporting cast. The art and animation are great as well, especially with the Aerial design and look.

The only thing bad I have to say about The Witch from Mercury is how they ended the first half. What made this series worth watching every week, was the storyline and character development and the last episode of the first half just undid what made the series special and went back to the old Gundam well of going to war and war is the only way to move the story forward. I don’t know about everyone else but that just made me kind of not look forward to the second half because if they went back to the same well then I wouldn’t be surprised if they kill off a fan-favorite character, do some stupid twist that shouldn’t be there at all or end on stupid depressing ending that might lead to a second season or a spinoff series.

The first half of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is on Crunchyroll right and the second half will be out sometime later this year.
