Yo Ho, WeRCatz here!

The video game Cuphead was released in 2017 by Studio MDHR with creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer. On February 18, 2022 The Cuphead Show! premiered on Netflix with 12 episodes.

This show looks almost exactly like Cuphead, but the only difference is that production was made by Studio MDHR and King Features Syndicate (the original owner of the world-famous Popeye the Sailor Man comic strips in 1929). Thanks to King Features, The Cuphead Show! looks like the old Fleischer Studios cartoons where famous characters Koko the Clown, Betty Boop, Popeye, Bimbo, and the original Superman reigned supreme.

Some of the animation techniques of yesteryear are resurrected in this show. The background in 3D looks almost exactly like the original Popeye short films (e.g. the famous, classic Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor from 1936 and Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves from 1937). I was happy to see that King Dice tries to resemble the great Cab Calloway from the Betty Boop cartoons, specifically the famous walrus that sings Cab’s classic “Minnie the Moocher.”

The jokes, the settings, and the cast give The Cuphead Show! a classic feel of the old cartoons that faded away. We should expect a whole lot more of Cuphead, Mugman, and friends since The Cuphead Show! has been scheduled for 36 more episodes. Season 2 will be released this summer. I can’t wait to watch some more Cuphead!
