Ahoy Captain Cats here and today I’m going to talk about a series that will turn 30 soon and that series is Berserk.

Kentaro Miura creates berserk; he is the artist, writer, and inker for this dark fantasy series. The series was first published in Monthly Animal House from 1989 till 1992 but renamed to Young Animal, and the magazine has been Berserk home to this day. Miura series takes place in a medieval dark fantasy world where it is killed or be killed. In the center of this world is the story of Guts, the series protagonist.

His entire life is nothing but hardship, death, and a complicated person to categorize. We see from when he was born, to becoming a mercenary, joining the band of hawk, to hell and back numerous times and so on. Within the 30 years of this ongoing series, it has become THE series when it comes to dark fantasy in Japan. Miura has had work on other series before Berserk, even a prototype of Berserk which help him to create the series. The series reached new heights in 1997 with the release of the now-legendary TV series that was aired in Japan from October of 1997 till March of 1998 with a total of 25 episodes. It would be 14 years later till the world would see anything new for Berserk with the year-long three-part film series retelling the Golden Age Arc, which would set up the 2016-2017 TV series. Berserk has also inspired numerous anime series and video games such as From Software’s Souls series.

The world of Berserk and its characters, their complexities of interacting with one another, the very dark tone and places this series has gone to and time has made Berserk an international hit for 30 years. Who knows when this series will reach its end, but its one of a very few series are still in print to this day and is created by one person.
