Night is Short, Walk On Girl Review: A Hidden Gem that you MUST watch!

Ahoy me mateys Captain Cats here! Today I’m reviewing an anime movie that came out last year and I have to say why didn’t I see or hear about this movie last year and this movie is called Night is Short, Walk On Girl.

This Japanese romantic comedy anime film is based on the novel ‘Yoru wa Mijikashi Aruke yo Otome’ by Tomihiko Morimi. Morimi also wrote The Tatmi Galaxy and was a TV series and the film is consider to be the spiritual sequel to that series. The film takes place during a night out with two protagonists, one a woman named “The Girl with Black Hair” and a man “senior.” The senior wants to tell the girl with black hair his feeling to her but ends up on a while adventurer, and so does she and it all takes place in one night. The film was directed by Masaaki Yuasa, famous for his other works such as:

• Mind Games
• The Tatami Galaxy
• Ping Pong The Animation
• Devilman Crybaby

Yuasa did a fantastic job on this film. The setting, pacing from start to finish, the artwork and fluidity of the animation is one of a kind. Its not a traditional anime film with the usual looks and feel, the animation feel raw and abstract but elegant and a joy to watch. The music was created by the legendary composer Michiru Oshima who has done work on:

• Ico
• Little Witch Academia
• Bloom Into You
• Year One in the North
• Memories of Tomorrow
• The Tatami Galaxy

The music in this film is outstanding and different at the same time. It’s unusual to what you may have heard in traditional anime films, so this is great if you are looking for something different. The main theme song of the film was done by the band Asian Kung-Fu Generation which is titled “Koya o Aruke” or “Walk in the Wilderness” in English and the vibe of the song make me want to go out and have an all-night drinking adventure.

The film has won two awards since it’s released. The film won Best Animated Feature at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.
