The Cult Classic Series Samurai Pizza Cats Turn 30
Ahoy Captain Cats here and today we are going to look at a cult classic series that turns 30 and has somewhat become more famous with older anime fans both here in the West and Japan and still has a fan base still and that series is Samurai Pizza Cats.
Known in Japan as Kyattto Ninden Teyandee, when translated it means Cat Ninja Legend Teyandee the series was produced by Tatsunoko Productions and Sotsu Agency and was first aired in Japan on February 1, 1990, on TV Tokyo till the series ended on February 12, 1991, with a total of 54 episodes. Saban Entertainment picks up the rights to the series in 1991 and a year or so to produce 52 episodes, the Samurai Pizza Cats made their way to the west and was on TV in 1993 in Canada and then 1996 in the US.
The series takes place in Little Tokyo in a fused world of part Feudal Japan with a mix of some kind of cyberpunk in terms of the city being mechanical and the people in this series are cybernetic anthropomorphic animals. From the first to the last episode this series is just one big slapstick comedy, which was very different at the time for any dub anime series, but they made it work and boy did it work. The voice acting, the very odd script, even the dub names for the cast was funny in every way i.e. Speedy Cerviche, Polly Esther, Guido Anchovy, Jerry Atric come on!
Over the years till now this offbeat series still has a fan base with older anime fans and while newer anime fans may think this series is either stupid or look horrible due to that the series didn’t age well at all, it still holds a special place in many anime fans who grew up watching this in the ’90s.
