Ahoy me mateys Captain Cats here, and today we are going to talk about 1989. Back in 1989, three anime series that aired for the very first time would go one to not only make history but stand the test of time and became beloved all over the world.
Dragon Ball Z – The direct sequel to Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, which ran from 1986- 1989, Dragon Ball Z or DBZ for short first aired two weeks after Dragon Ball just ended. DBZ ran from 1989 till it ended in 1996, an eight-year run with 291 episodes under its belt. Soon after the rest of the world had a chance to see DBZ for the first time, it became an instant hit worldwide.
Ranma ½ – Rumiko Takahashi’s beloved martial art rom-com has a funny story about its series run. The first time it started its run it was canceled in the same year of 1989 due to low ratings. The same anime staff went back to work on the series did some changes to it and was back on the air later that year in 1989, and 143 episodes later the series ended in 1992. After the series ended, it went on to create three animated films, an OVA series, a handful of specials and a two-hour live action special.
Patlabor: The TV Series – Masami Yuki manga Mobile Police Patlabor or Patlabor for short started as an Original Video Animation or OVA for short. OVA are series or films that were made to be released directly to home video format, in other words, OVA was direct to video before it became a common thing now in the present. Patlabor OVAs became so popular they had to create a full tv series which ran from 1989 till 1990 with 47 episodes and later another OVA series, three animated films, a live action tv series, and film.
